A Note from Roger
My most vivid recollection of helping came from a phone call I received from a regional carrier. They had a young lady F.O. who was terminally ill. They wanted to purchase a model of the airplane they flew to help raise money towards her medical bills. Needless to say, we very gladly donated several models.
Shortly after, we received a request by Southwest Airlines for a donation on 3 models to be signed by Herb Kelleher for an event on Miami Beach with ISTAT (International Society of Transport Aircraft Traders). The models were duly signed, but we were taken aback when our $325.00 models sold for $4500.00 EACH! We had brought one of our wall mounted noses to give to our hero, Herb Kelleher. When we saw what the models sold for, we asked Herb if he could auction this nose off, and we promised we would replace it. Herb then took charge and proceeded to literally squeeze $17,500 out of it. This evenings grand total for our 4 pieces was a whopping $31,000.00. All of it going to the ISTAT Foundations, scholarship fund. Talk about thrill! It awoke our eyes to the possibilities on how to extend our small gifts value. Our generous partners that signed these pieces were invaluable in making it all possible.
We have donated models of the “Miracle on the Hudson” A320 for various fundraisers with the help of Sully Sullenberger.
Our most rewarding donation came on the first anniversary of the our 911 tragedy. United Airlines requested 3 models to present to the New York City Fire Department. While they didn't request “free” models, we could not bring ourselves to collect for it. We wanted to help.
Several years ago, we purchased the assets of Air Jet models here in Miami. We have donated many of the small plastic models to events with kids for them to assemble.
